Learning to Sail

How to start sailing in Cornwall?

The South West is a renowned nurturing ground for excellent young sailors. Royal Yachting Association (RYA) centres are dotted along the coastline waiting for the next Ben Ainslie. Joining a sailing club as a young person opens up many opportunities including learning a new skill, networking, competition and even a prospective career.

Many local Cornish clubs offer discounted or even free sessions for young people living in the area, an unmissable opportunity which many elsewhere would pay a great amount for. Additionally, dinghy sailing is a great way to get outdoors and have fun, especially in beautiful locations throughout the country.

The RYA offers the British Youth Sailing scheme a range of qualifications in everything from Seamanship to Spinnaker Racing, for beginners through to advanced sailors. Joining a club can introduce young people to racing, regattas, sponsorship and boat skills which can be carried through to further dinghy and yachting experiences.
