'Charlotte Padbury' was a 49.8m, 642 tonne Barque sailing ship built at our yard in 1874. She was bought and resold by a series of Norwegian owners, and captained by O. Aslagsen, but most famously W. Padbury – an Englishman who was one of the first revolutionary settlers in Western Australia.
The ship was named after his late wife, Mrs Charlotte Padbury, a woman who grew up in the colony of Western Australia and filled her life with charity work for the benefit of women and those less advantaged than herself. W. Padbury is recognised as a fundamental character in the development and colonisation of Western Australia, building farming and milling businesses across Australia and Perth in particular. He is also recognised for his charitable work, aiding orphaned children and those in need, even financing farms and families of whom reflect his personal background as a poor and disadvantaged lad growing up in England.
Charlotte Padbury was used for transportation of goods between England, Norway and Australia. However, she came to an unfortunate end. On the 24th February 1916, Charlotte Padbury ran aground in Champion Bay, West Australian coast and was wrecked. Little more is known about after the vessel’s wreck.
