A bad delivery journey resulted in Pirate’s engines being wrecked and irreparable even before they caught fire. She has racing pedigree as her sister Ocean Pirate has come fourth in a Round Britain Race so, despite being declared a constructive total loss, the owner asked Falmouth Boat Co. to change the engines.
Falmouth Boat Co. replaced the orginal Cummins 300hp engines with twin 480hp Cummins which are more fuel efficient - and significantly larger. It was a challenge to fit the engines into a space designed for smaller units but the team did it. Pirate can now maintain a steady speed of 40 knots. Attention has now turned to the interior to ensure that she looks as good as she goes.
The owner said, “The skill and expertise of Jonathan Fielding and the rest of the team haven’t just repaired Pirate – they’ve given her a new lease of life. It is fantastic to see her planing over the waves at full throttle exactly as she was designed to over fifty years ago.”
Her first sea trials were documented by ITV Westcountry here.
